About Ruofeng Qiu, MD

Ruofeng Qiu, M.D., an internist, received a Doctor of Medicine from Sun Yat-sen University, Zhongshan School of Medicine in Guangzhou, China. He completed post medical school clinical training at First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and an internal medicine residency at Capital Health System in New Jersey.

He says he chose internal medicine because it was a very intellectual and comprehensive field that offers the opportunity to see adult patients for a broad area of concerns, including preventative care, pre-surgical risk assessments, chronic diseases, vaccinations, screening tests and primary care.

“In internal medicine we follow the same group of patients so we can see the patient actually making progress in their health condition,” Dr. Qiu says. “That is the most rewarding part of the job I think.”

For Dr. Qiu, the foundation of a good patient-provider relationship is communication.

“I spend a lot of time talking with a patient to explain to them their own health condition,” he says. “I want to make sure they understand their condition because I believe only by understanding their own condition they can be more cooperative and eventually we can achieve a better result.”

Dr. Qiu says he is from a family that has a healthcare tradition. His mother was not a doctor but she worked in a hospital.

“Since I was a young age she educated me that the most important thing in the healthcare system is communication, it makes all the difference,” he says. “I have found through my training that is the truth. That’s why I spend a lot of time talking with my patients to make sure they understand about their health.”

When he is not at work, Dr. Qiu enjoys hiking with his wife. “As long as the weather permits, we go hiking,” he says.
