Dr. Thompson received his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his neurology residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
“I love that my specialty allows me to connect with patients, to talk with them, since making a diagnosis often doesn’t depend on a special lab or imaging but on my exam and interview,” he says. “I love that, because that’s the very core of medicine.”
Dr. Thompson has a special interest in headache disorders, including migraines and tension type headaches.
“When diagnosing headache disorders, part of my job is to tease out what is in the realm of normal and what is abnormal,” he says. “Of course, there are some people in that gray zone between what is normal and what isn’t but that’s what makes my job rewarding every day – helping those people.”
Born and raised in Nigeria, Dr. Thompson says he believes his multi-national background makes him “much more keen and open-minded on those little things, socially, culturally, that can make a difference in how a patient feels when I’m considering their personal, professional and social background in my understanding of what’s going on medically.”
He believes a strong and open relationship with patients is a major factor in positive outcomes.
“As one of my mentors once told me, the patient will tell you what is going on if you’ll only listen,” Dr. Thompson says. “The most important thing is that the patient has to feel heard. When they know you’re listening they’ll try to listen back.”
He says if he wasn’t a medical provider he believes he’d like being a full-time, stay-at-home dad to his two sons, who are two- and four-years-old.
In his spare time, Dr. Thompson enjoys spending time with his family, reading and exercising.
