About Kiriana A Morse, MD
Kiriana Morse, M.D., a board-certified emergency medicine physician, has joined the staff at Elliot Hospital’s Emergency Department.
She earned a Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and a B.S. in behavioral neuroscience from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. Dr. Morse completed an emergency medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland, and a fellowship in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals & Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin.
“I chose emergency medicine because I get to see a little bit of everything – all the way from a kid complaining of ear pain up to an elderly patient with chest pain or the man who was working and fell off a roof,” she says. “I love not knowing what I’m going to encounter that day and I love being able to help people on what is typically a pretty bad day for them.”
Dr. Morse, who describes herself as someone who grew up in a “lower socioeconomic status,” says she is particularly interested in treating the underserved patient population. “I really like to help people who would otherwise never see a doctor and are coming in to see me in the emergency department, on what is typically the worst day of their life, because I feel like I can make a big difference,” she says.
As an emergency medicine physician, Dr. Morse says she considers herself a patient advocate. “I think of myself as the voice of the patient,” she says. “I’m always trying to do what I think is in their best interest and get them to the specialist who they need or get them to stay in the hospital if that’s what I think is going to provide them with the best care.”
Her goal is to put herself “in the other person’s shoes and if I can’t, then my next go-to is ‘What would I do if this was my mom? What would I do if this was my brother?’ because that’s how patients want to be seen.”
When Dr. Morse isn’t at work, her priority is spending time with her family. “I have a young daughter and being able to be at home to watch her grow and hit her milestones is the best thing I’ve ever done hands down,” she says.
She also likes the outdoors, especially hiking and kayaking, and enjoys baking and reading.
