About Gerald Sardella, MD
Gerald Sardella, MD, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, brings over 30 years of expertise in advanced cardiac surgery.
Dr. Sardella earned a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry from Dartmouth College and completed his Doctor of Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. He pursued an integrated general surgery residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University.
“During my first week of medical school, I began shadowing a cardiac surgeon. Combining my research knowledge with real-time clinical experiences solidified my decision to pursue cardiothoracic surgery,” says Dr. Sardella. “The technical challenges and life-changing outcomes of cardiac surgery have kept me fully engaged in this specialty.”
Dr. Sardella has held prominent leadership roles throughout his career. He served as chief of cardiac surgery at Concord Hospital from 2007 to 2019 and has been a cardiac surgery attending at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, New Hampshire, since 2019. In February 2024, he was named chief of cardiac surgery. He has also contributed to clinical research through the Northern New England Cardiovascular Study Group, reflecting his commitment to advancing cardiothoracic surgery.
Dr. Sardella emphasizes the importance of trust in the patient-provider relationship. “Trust is developed during the initial consultation and carries through treatment and recovery,” he explains. “By the end of a visit, I often see patients and their families begin to relax and feel confident about the path ahead.”
When not at work, Dr. Sardella enjoys spending time with his wife of 30 years, Maryellen, and their four children: Nicole, John, Sarah, and Michael. The family also has seven dogs—Liam, Baylee, Ollie, Penny, Clementine, Gracie, and Sherman. “My family fills my life with love and laughter, whether we’re traveling abroad or spending time together at home.”
Dr. Sardella looks forward to collaborating with the Elliot Heart and Vascular Center team to develop a robust cardiac surgical program focused on excellent outcomes and exceptional patient-centered care.
