The Elliot Health System, located in Manchester, New Hampshire, is comprised of the Elliot Hospital (a 296-bed acute care facility) in addition to an extensive outpatient network. This outpatient network offers pharmacy residents ambulatory care opportunities and includes a number of pediatric and family practice offices, in addition to various specialty clinics, including geriatrics, cardiology, and endocrinology. The Elliot’s PGY-1 pharmacy residency program began in 2008 and currently offers two PGY-1 resident positions.
The purpose of a PGY-1 pharmacy residency program per the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training.
The PGY-1 pharmacy residency program at Elliot Health System is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program is affiliated with Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) in Manchester.
Elliot Health System will prepare pharmacists with the clinical skillset and confidence necessary to be a clinical pharmacy practitioner in either the hospital setting or in ambulatory care. Residents completing this program will be able to pursue any of the following positions:
- PGY-2 specialty residency
- Clinical pharmacist position
- Adjunct faculty position
In order to provide the best learning environment possible for the resident, the Elliot Health System Pharmacy Department will ensure that:
- There are adequate pharmacist role models for residents who practice routinely in the area for which they precept.
- Preceptors have committed themselves to teaching the resident using direct instruction, modeling, coaching and facilitating.
- An adequate practice model environment exists for the learning experience.

There is flexibility within the rotation schedule to match residents with their areas of interest. Each resident will complete all of the required rotations as well as participate in longitudinal experiences.

Residents are required to be involved in committees, attend conferences, and complete a staffing component and projects to complete the program.

Teaching
We offer multiple teaching opportunities including precepting students, optional lecture and a teaching certificate program.
Precepting Students
Residents will have the opportunity to precept pharmacy students. Elliot Hospital works with a number of area pharmacy schools.
Optional Lecture
Residents will have the opportunity to lecture at MCPHS Manchester.
Teaching Certificate Program
During the course of the residency year, the residents may participate in a teaching certificate program.
