Meet The Elliot Heart and Vascular Center’s newest providers 

Dr. Robert W. Abdu: Dr. Abdu is a fellowship-trained vascular surgeon in Manchester, New Hampshire. He has unique training in complex endovascular and minimally invasive treatment of aortic aneurysms and peripheral vascular disease. He practices the full scope of vascular surgery, including treatment of carotid, mesenteric, and venous disease, as well as dialysis access. 

“The relationship with our patients is a two-way street. It really helps to spend time, to listen to them, and understand where they are coming from and what their goals are. Educating my patients about their vascular disease empowers them to be involved in their treatment plan.” 

 Dr. Stephen Hanlon: With 17 years of serving the Manchester community, Dr. Hanlon brings his experience and a deep commitment to our community and patient care. Dr. Hanlon treats the full breadth of cardiology patients, focusing on advanced heart failure and cardiac imaging, specifically echocardiography. 

“What appeals to me about taking care of heart failure patients, in particular, is that I get an opportunity to spend a lot of time with them, forming a long-standing relationship with them and their families. I help them through difficult times in their life, hopefully to a point where they can be much more functional and have a much better quality of life than when I first met them.” 

Dr. Gerald Sardella: Dr. Sardella, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, brings over 30 years of expertise in advanced cardiac surgery in the greater Manchester area. He is dedicated to providing patient-centered care and fostering a relationship of trust and understanding with each individual he treats. 

“The ideal patient/provider relationship centers on trust. This trust is developed during the initial consultation and carries through treatment and recovery. After 30 years of performing cardiac surgery, I am still humbled by the great benefit patients receive who undergo this life-saving treatment. Within days after surgery, they notice marked improvements in their quality of life, exercise tolerance, and feeling of well-being.” 

Dr. Peter Shaw:  A long-time Manchester physician, Dr. Shaw is a fellowship-trained expert in advanced cardiac imaging modalities such as Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT. He is a board-certified noninvasive cardiologist specializing in advanced cardiac imaging. His expertise in cardiac imaging, including MRI, CT, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology, complements The Elliot’s focus on using advanced technology for accurate diagnosis and care.   

“I got into advanced imaging because it’s the best way to look at the heart without diving into it. The advances in new CT and MRI technologies have allowed us to visualize the heart in-depth to figure out what’s going on from the outside. From my perspective, everything we do has risks and benefits. My job is to discuss that with you and figure out the best options you have available for diagnostics and treatment.” 

Dr. Jessica A. Sutherland: Dr. Sutherland brings her expertise as an interventional cardiologist. She is one of the few female interventional cardiologists in the area, offering a unique perspective to heart care and interventional procedures. Dr. Sutherland specializes in coronary disease and myocardial infarction. 

“Being an interventionalist means that I frequently meet patients and their families during some of their most difficult health moments. My goal is to provide the highest quality of care in a compassionate and supportive manner, not only during our initial encounter, but also in the days, weeks, and months that follow. While it is certainly an incredible feeling to be part of the team performing life-altering procedures, I also very much enjoy building long-term relationships with my patients to aid in their recovery and help reduce future risk.” 

Dr. Vikas Veeranna: Dr. Veeranna is a long-time Manchester physician who specializes in advanced cardiac imaging, cardiovascular computed tomography, cardiac MRI, and nuclear cardiology. His dedication to innovative imaging techniques offers patients our commitment to early, precise diagnoses, and tailored treatment plans. 

“Patient outcome is paramount in terms of imaging. What we see with the kind of imaging techniques we have currently at The Elliot - the cutting-edge technology in terms of CTs, MRIs or PET scans – are that they provide us with that extra step, personalized to the patient, to get to the bottom of answers and direct our therapies based on those answers to improve outcomes for patients.”
