How AI Is Changing Healthcare: Insights from Dr. Holly Mintz
Dr. Holly Mintz, senior vice president and chief medical officer for Elliot Health System, is increasingly sought after to speak nationally about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. In a recent episode of Business New Hampshire Magazine’s BizCastNH podcast, she discusses where we are now and the potential future of AI in medicine.
At its core, AI is about helping providers focus more on patients. Tools like AI-powered notetaking allow providers to sit next to their patients, have meaningful conversations, and capture more detailed information without the distraction of typing on a computer. As Dr. Mintz says, “You don’t go to medical school to type on a computer. You go to medical school to interact with patients.”
AI at The Elliot
Over the past three years, Elliot Health System has integrated AI to improve provider efficiency, enhance patient satisfaction, and reduce burnout. Patients overwhelmingly appreciate the technology, as it helps them feel genuinely seen and heard during visits. The notes from these interactions are immediately available in their patient portal, improving transparency.
The future of AI
AI’s potential extends beyond notetaking. In March, new technology will help track incidental lung findings—conditions not initially being searched for but flagged during imaging—ensuring proper follow-up care. AI will soon also assist in streamlining nursing documentation and pulling relevant patient information and health history for consultations.
However, Dr. Mintz is clear: AI is a tool, not a replacement. It should not make diagnoses or remove the human connection from medicine. Instead, it supports providers in delivering high-quality, efficient, and accessible care.
As the healthcare landscape evolves, those who embrace AI tools will be better equipped to provide exceptional care. Want to hear more? Listen to Dr. Mintz’s full discussion on BizCastNH here.
