Honoring Compassion and Expertise: A Spotlight on Elliot Gastroenterology Nurse Cate Cambray
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to spreading knowledge about prevention, early detection, and the critical role of healthcare professionals in managing digestive health. At Elliot Gastroenterology, our team is made up of dedicated experts who provide compassionate and specialized care to our patients. One such team member is Catherine (Cate) Cambray, MSN, RN, whose journey into nursing and gastroenterology is an inspiring testament to passion and perseverance.
A calling to care
Cate’s interest in medicine and health began at a young age. Inspired by her experiences with her grandparents' medical care, she felt drawn to nursing early on.
“My parents encouraged me to explore nursing after seeing different aspects of health care with my sick grandparents growing up,” Cate recalls. “My first injection was at age 12, helping my grandmother with her insulin. I remember visiting my dad’s mom in the ICU and watching the nurses manage every aspect of her care and being in awe. One nurse in particular was kind enough to walk me through everything attached to my grandmother.”
That moment of awe never left her, setting the foundation for a career dedicated to patient care and education.
A journey of growth and learning
Cate’s path to becoming a nurse was built on hands-on experience and continuous education. She began her career as a unit aide before advancing to a licensed nursing assistant (LNA) while working toward her associate degree in nursing. From there, she continued to gain experience in medical oncology and surgical step-down care, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and later a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a focus on nursing education.
Through each step, she remained committed to patient care and mentorship, helping guide future generations of nurses.
Finding a passion for gastroenterology
While nursing offers many specialties, Cate found her calling in gastroenterology. “I have always had an affinity for GI and how this complex system affects the whole person,” she explains. “As a new grad, I worked with many great gastroenterologists who took the time to explain and educate. They were a wealth of information, filling in my gaps in knowledge and making me a better nurse. The GI system is involved in every aspect of patient care, from the pediatric patient to the elderly.”
Her passion for gastroenterology is evident in her dedication to patients and her enthusiasm for the field’s evolving nature.
The rewards of patient care
With over 20 years in nursing, Cate has countless patient stories that have left a lasting impact on her. One particularly memorable experience involved a patient who initially came in for a gallbladder removal but developed severe complications.
“She became septic, and I was able to care for her in the many weeks that followed,” Cate recalls. “I got to know her and her family while working with her on wound care and medication teaching. It was rewarding to watch her get stronger with physical and occupational therapy and eventually go home.”
These moments of healing and connection fuel her passion for nursing, reinforcing the importance of compassionate, patient-centered care.
Advice for future nurses
Cate knows firsthand the challenges and rewards of a nursing career. Her advice to those considering the profession is simple:
“Be patient with yourself—there are so many different areas of nursing that you will find your place. Nursing is a team mentality. We work together for the best interest of the patient.”
She also emphasizes the qualities essential to success in nursing: patience, self-advocacy, teamwork, and a willingness to keep learning.
“Nursing and health care are ever-evolving. It’s an awesome ride to be on!” she says.
A family at The Elliot
Cate’s career has flourished at The Elliot, where she first completed her clinical training as a student. She credits the supportive and collaborative environment for keeping her here.
“I love my GI family! Everyone, from the patient service representatives to the clinical team and the providers, is amazing to work with. They all truly care for our patients, and we work together. The GI team is always good for a laugh, a shoulder to lean on, or a quick dance party.”
This sense of teamwork and camaraderie makes The Elliot a special place for both staff and patients.
A lasting impact
As she looks ahead, Cate hopes her legacy in nursing will be one of balancing clinical expertise and compassionate care.
“Nursing is a work of science as well as an art. We are professionals who carry an immense amount of knowledge and experience. I hope that we continue to nurture and support our newer nurses and work collaboratively with other disciplines for the betterment of the patient.”
Cate Cambray’s story reminds us of the dedication and heart that nurses bring to healthcare every day. During Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we celebrate the importance of prevention and treatment and the professionals like Cate who make a difference in patients’ lives.
