Neurocognitive Services

The Elliot provides neuropsychological testing and neuropsychological rehabilitation services to adults and families who are impacted by neurological and/or psychiatric illnesses. We collaborate with many disciplines and take an integrated view of optimal health because physical health, cognitive health, and psychological health are inextricably intertwined.

What is Clinical Neuropsychology?

Clinical neuropsychology is a specialty within the field of clinical psychology that examines the relationship between brain functioning and cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. A clinical neuropsychologist is a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in the assessment and treatment of psychological disorders, as well as specialized training in neuropsychological testing (cognitive and psychological testing).

Effective December 3, 2024, Elliot Memory and Mobility is named Elliot Neurocognitive Services. This new name more accurately reflects the range of services we provide to patients and families, emphasizing our focus on comprehensive neurocognitive care. Please note, this is strictly a name change. All current services, providers, and patient care standards will remain the same. Our commitment to delivering exceptional and compassionate care continues to be our top priority.

Individuals are typically referred when there are questions about the presence and/or neuropsychological impact of:

 

  • Mild or major neurocognitive disorder
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Frontotemporal lobar degeneration
  • Primary progressive aphasia
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Essential tremor
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Traumatic brain injury

  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Services

Neuropsychological testing involves a series of paper-and-pencil and computer-based tests to formally assess cognitive and psychological functioning and compare these results to appropriate normative samples, when available. The purpose of this form of testing is to identify specific strengths and weaknesses in cognitive and psychological functioning in order to assist referring providers with diagnosis and treatment planning. Testing is administered and interpreted by a licensed clinical neuropsychologist.

Neuropsychological rehabilitation consists of a wide variety of interventions geared toward optimizing cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial functioning for both patients and care partners.  Examples of the services and interventions provided during EMMC follow-up visits to both patients and care partners are as follows:

  • Monitoring of cognitive trajectory with brief cognitive screening
  • Psychoeducation for patients and care partners with topics including:
    • Underlying neurological disease and/or psychiatric disorder
    • Dementia staging
    • The critical importance of care partner’s self-care
  • Provision of basic tools and strategies to help patients and care partners adjust to impact of cognitive difficulties on day-to-day life, for example…
    • Progressive muscle relaxation
    • Mindfulness training
    • Sleep hygiene strategies
    • Diagnosis-appropriate communication strategies
  • Individually-tailored compensatory cognitive rehabilitation
  • Individually-tailored psychological interventions as needed using strategies from, for example...
    • Psychoanalytic psychotherapy
    • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), including Trauma-Focused CBT
    • Acceptance and commitment therapy
    • Somatic Psychotherapy
