Newborn Hearing Screening

The Elliot Hospital Neurophysiology Department has been offering Universal Newborn Hearing Screening since June of 1996. The testing is done in the newborn nursery or in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) when the baby is quiet (generally this test is done during the night shift). It is a simple procedure requiring the application of three disposable sensors and two disposable earmuffs. The test takes approximately 15 minutes, is painless, and in most cases does not disturb a sleeping baby. Early identification of hearing loss allows for early treatment.
