Important Notice:  Elliot On-Call after hours nurse triage services are changing.  After August 22, 2011 our Triage Nurses will be available to assist you with your health concerns during the following hours:  Weekdays until 10 pm, Saturdays 8 am to 5 pm and Sundays 8 am to 3 pm.  If you need to speak with a nurse or doctor outside of these hours, or when the office is closed, please call this office.  The on-call doctor will return your call to assist you with your urgent healthcare concerns.

Brian F. Gilchrist, MD

Internationally renowned pediatric surgeon, Brian F. Gilchrist, MD, joined the Elliot Health System as the first full time Chief of Pediatric Surgery in September 2009. He came to Manchester in order to spearhead the development of the Elliot’s New Hampshire’s Children’s Hospital and the University of New Hampshire’s planned medical School. He is a graduate of Tufts College and Tufts Medical School and trained at Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Harvard and Brown University’s Hasbro Children’s hospital. Dr. Gilchrist served as a combat surgeon with the 311th Evacuation Hospital during the First Persian Gulf War. He is a prolific writer and lecturer throughout the world. He has edited a seminal monograph on Necrotizing Entercolitis in infants. He currently resides in Amherst, New Hampshire.



Michael M. Fuenfer, MD

A native of Louisville, KY, Dr. Michael Fuenfer received a BA degree in Biology in 1972 from Northwestern University and his MD degree from the University of Louisville in 1976. He completed residency training in General Surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital and The Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT, Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Surgical Critical Care at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Fellowship training in Neonatology at the University of Connecticut, Farmington, CT and Pediatric Surgery at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, AL.  He is currently certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatrics, and Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine, and by the American Board Surgery in General Surgery, Surgical Critical Care and Pediatric Surgery.  Dr. Fuenfer has been a commissioned officer in the US Army Reserve since 1983 and has served in a variety of operational assignments including as a Flight Surgeon, Special Operations Medical Officer, Combat Surgeon in Afghanistan and at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.  He holds a Commercial pilot’s license and has a special interest in air medical transport and aviation medicine.


   

Directions to the Office

From Downtown Manchester:
From Elm Street, take Valley Street east. Take a left onto Tarrytown Road. From Tarrytown Road, turn left onto Elliot Way.

From the Manchester Airport:
From Manchester Airport, turn right onto Goffs Falls Road. Goffs Falls Road becomes Huse Road. At the end of Huse Road, take a left at the lights onto South Mammoth Road. Turn left onto Massebesic Street. Turn right onto Tarrytown Road at the intersection. Elliot Hospital/Elliot Way is the first road on the left.

From the North:
Take I-93 South, bear right after the Hooksett tollbooth to remain on I-93. Take Exit 8 (Wellington Road) off I-93.  At the end of the exit ramp (traffic light), take a right. At the next set of traffic lights, take a left onto Mammoth Road. You will pass the Derryfield Country Club on your left. Proceed through two sets of traffic lights. Take your next right onto Nelson Street. Elliot Hospital is directly across the street.

From the South (Derry/Salem/Londonderry area):
Tale I-93 North, South of Manchester, the highway divides (93 & 293). Stay on I-93 and then take Exit 6 (Candia Road). Turn left at the first set of traffic lights. Stay on Candia Road about 1 mile and take a right at the next set of traffic lights onto Mammoth Road. Go straight at the next set of traffic lights, turn left onto Nelson Street and follow it to the end. Elliot Hospital is directly across the street.

From Massachusetts and Southern NH:
In Massachusetts, take Route 3 North. Route 3 becomes the Everett Turnpike at the NH state line. Take first exit after tollbooth (Route 101 East/293). Stay on 101 East, which merges onto I-93 North. Continue approximately 1.2 miles to Exit 6 (Candia Road). Take a left at the first set of traffic lights. Stay on Candia Road about 1 mile and take a right at the next set of traffic lights onto Mammoth Road. Go straight at next set of traffic lights, turn left onto Nelson Street, and follow it to the end. Elliot Hospital is directly across the street.

From the West:
Take 101 East to I-293 South. Turn onto I-93 North to Exit 6 (Candia Road). Take a left at the first set of traffic lights. Stay on Candia Road about 1 mile and take a right at the next set of traffic lights onto Mammoth Road. Go straight at next set of traffic lights, turn left onto Nelson Street, and follow it to the end. Elliot Hospital is directly across the street.

From the East:
Take 101 West. Bear right onto I-93 North to Exit 8 (Wellington Road). Bear right at the end of the exit. Go straight through two sets of traffic lights. Take a left at the second set of traffic lights, onto Mammoth Road. Continue through two more sets of traffic lights. Take a right onto Nelson Street, and follow it to the end. Elliot Hospital is directly across the street.

Once Inside the Hospital:
Once you have entered the main entrance of the Elliot Hospital, you will then follow the hallway to your left and continue walking straight past the gift shop to the visitor elevators located right before Dunkin Donuts. Take the elevator to floor 2, and take the hallway to your right, straight down to the end of the corridor past the Sleep Center.


Preparing for Surgery

Fasting Guidelines

Patients Aged Twelve Months or Older
For all surgeries schedule 0800 or earlier – NOTHING to eat or drink after midnight.
For all surgeries scheduled later than 0800 – NO solid foods after midnight. May have CLEAR LIQUIDS ONLY until 4 hours prior to surgery.

CLEAR LIQUIDS ARE: Water, apple juice, cranberry juice, Gatorade, clear broth,
Jello, black coffee, black tea, clear sodas (minimal amounts).

NO MILK OR MILK PRODUCTS.
NO ORANGE JUICE OR OTHER JUICES WITH PULP.

 

Patients Under Twelve Months of Age
Breast milk or clear liquids until 4 hours prior to surgery.
Formula until 6 hours prior to surgery, then clear liquids until 4 hours prior to surgery.

The provision of patient care is an individualized process; thus the clinician/provider may use independent judgment to adapt and modify standards, protocols, procedures, or guidelines in order to render the most effective care.
Guidelines are ONLY recommended processes.
