Because kids have breathing problems too…New Hampshire Hospital for Children

Children are not simply little adults and may have a different reason for their cough or difficulty breathing.  For this reason, they may need a specialist well trained in pediatric pulmonary disease.

Designed for children and adolescents…

If your child has breathing problems, or a possible problem with his or her lungs, your pediatrician or family doctor may refer you to the pulmonary clinic for further evaluation.  Pediatric pulmonologists diagnose, treat, and manage children from birth to 21 years old with breathing and lung diseases.  New Hampshire’s Hospital for Children is proud to provide the community with the services of our board certified pediatric pulmonologist who has completed extensive training in all aspects of pediatric respiratory problems.

Pediatric pulmonologists often treat children with the following conditions:

  • Chronic cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Recurring pneumonia (infection of the lungs)
  • Asthma
  • Exercise-related breathing problems
  • Apnea
  • Chronic lung disease in premature infants
  • Noisy breathing / wheezing
  • Congenital Lung Anomalies
  • Chest wall deformities
  • Conditions that require special equipment to monitor and/or help with breathing at home such as neuromuscular disorders
In times of need…

A pediatric practice that can manage a complex pulmonary problems while collaborating with other pediatric specialists and your pediatrician to provide exemplary care.  All close to home.

The Pediatric Pulmonary department at New Hampshire’s Hospital for Children is available for both hospital and office based consultation.  We strive to meet your child's and family's needs for information, recommendations, and support through evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.  Our goal is to normalize your child’s activity level and promote sustained respiratory wellness.

Procedures we perform include:

  • Pulmonary function testing
  • Flexible Bronchoscopy
  • Exercise testing
  • Methacoline airway challenges
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Pediatric sleep evaluations
  • Hypnosis therapy for vocal cord dysfunction and habit cough

Procedures and clinic evaluations can be coordinated with multiple subspecialists such as pediatric gastroenterology, otolaryngology (ENT) and pediatric surgery as needed.

The Little Lungs Program
The Little Lung Program at New Hampshire’s Hospital for Children is a multidisciplinary approach to maximize the growth and development of the respiratory system of children with a history of premature birth.   We partner with local pediatricians and family practitioners to care for high risk infants and children.   The program allows coordination of care between primary care providers, other subspecialists, social work and nutrition.

In accordance with the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics, New Hampshire’s Hospital for Children offers prevention of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) with monthly Synagis® injections.  For certain high-risk pediatric patients, RSV infection may cause significant lower respiratory tract disease and lead to hospitalization.
